Cousins of sharks. Stingrays are cartilaginous fish, which means their skeleton is made of bendy cartilage, the same stuff as your ears and nose, instead of hard bone, just like sharks.
Built like a kite. Their wide, flat bodies let them glide through the water by flapping their fin 'wings,' almost like an underwater kite.
A huge family. There are about 220 known species of stingrays, sorted into 29 groups called genera and eleven different families.
Hidden in sand. Many stingrays rest on the seafloor and bury themselves in sand, leaving just their eyes peeking out to watch for food.
