Cool facts
Fruit of a fungus. A mushroom is the fleshy, spore-bearing part of a fungus, kind of like how an apple is the fruit of a tree. The rest of the fungus often hides underground.
Spore spreaders. Mushrooms make tiny spores instead of seeds. These spores float away to start brand-new fungi somewhere else.
Beware toadstools. A 'toadstool' usually means a poisonous mushroom. That's why you should never eat a wild mushroom unless an expert says it's safe.
Pops up fast. Mushrooms can appear seemingly overnight, often after rain, growing on soil, wood, or other food sources.
