Cool facts
Butterflies transform completely. A butterfly starts as a tiny egg, becomes a caterpillar that munches leaves, then forms a chrysalis where its entire body reorganizes into a beautiful winged butterfly. It's like becoming a completely different creature!
Tadpoles become frogs. Baby frogs called tadpoles live in water with gills and tails, but as they grow, they develop legs, lungs, and lose their tails to become hoppy land frogs. This dramatic change is called metamorphosis.
Some bugs skip it. Not all insects go through complete metamorphosis, some, like grasshoppers, just grow bigger and get wings without changing much else. Others, like beetles, change completely like butterflies do.
Sea creatures transform too. Fish, squid, crabs, and even jellyfish can undergo metamorphosis, changing their body shape and sometimes how they eat as they grow from babies to adults.
It happens fast. While some metamorphosis takes weeks, the change in a chrysalis can be astonishingly quick, a caterpillar's body completely reorganizes in just 10-15 days!
