Big bright wings. Butterflies are insects famous for their large, often brightly colored wings that usually fold together when they rest.
Fluttery flyers. They have a special bouncy, fluttering flight that's easy to spot as they dance through the air.
Super ancient. The oldest butterfly fossils are about 56 million years old, but clues in their DNA suggest they may have first appeared even earlier, back in the age of dinosaurs.
Part of a family. Butterflies belong to a group of insects called Papilionoidea, which is part of the larger order known as Lepidoptera.
