Cool facts
Break Down Dead Stuff. Decomposers like fungi and bacteria eat dead plants and animals, breaking them apart into tinier pieces. This is kind of like how your stomach digests food, except decomposers do it on the outside of their food instead of inside a body.
Release Nutrients Back. When decomposers break down dead matter, they release nutrients like nitrogen and carbon back into the soil and air. These nutrients help new plants grow and feed other living things, nothing goes to waste in nature!
Use External Digestion. Decomposers release special chemicals called enzymes directly onto dead material to break it down, rather than swallowing it first. It's like spraying a special dissolving juice on food before eating it.
Nature's Recyclers. Without decomposers, dead leaves, fallen trees, and dead animals would just pile up forever. Instead, decomposers turn all that dead stuff into food for soil and new plants.
