Cool facts
Super social. Ants are eusocial, meaning they live and work together in colonies like one giant team, each with its own job.
Bendy antennae. You can spot an ant by its elbowed (geniculate) antennae and its skinny, node-like waist.
Wasp cousins. Ants belong to the order Hymenoptera, the same group as bees and wasps, and evolved from wasp ancestors long ago.
So many kinds. Scientists have described more than 13,800 ant species, out of an estimated 22,000 total.
Dinosaur era. Ants first appeared way back in the Cretaceous period, when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth.
