Cool facts
Star-shaped sea creatures. Starfish, also called sea stars, are shaped like a star and belong to a group of marine animals called Asteroidea. There are about 1,900 different species!
Found everywhere. They live on the seabed in every ocean on Earth, from warm tropical waters to freezing polar seas.
Super deep divers. Starfish can live in shallow tide pools or all the way down to about 6,000 meters (20,000 feet) deep in the dark abyss.
No backbone. Starfish are invertebrates, which means they have no spine, they're related to sea urchins and sand dollars, not to fish at all.
