Two living kinds. There are only two species of alligator left today: the American alligator and the Chinese alligator.

Super old reptile. Alligators first appeared about 37 million years ago, way back in the late Eocene epoch.

Crocodile cousins. Alligators belong to the order Crocodilia, which makes crocodiles their close relatives.

Fossil family. Scientists have found several extinct alligator species preserved as fossils.
