Cool facts
What it is. The balance beam is a thin, rectangular piece of equipment used in artistic gymnastics. Female gymnasts perform routines on it, doing tricks like handstands, flips, and turns while staying on top of the beam.
Specific measurements. A competition balance beam is about 16 feet long, 1 foot wide, and 4 feet tall off the ground. That's narrower than a ruler, so gymnasts need incredible balance and precision to move across it.
Competitive sport. Balance beam is one of the four main artistic gymnastics events performed by women in competitions, including the Olympics. Judges score routines based on difficulty, execution, and artistry.
Skills required. Gymnasts must have amazing body control, strength, and focus to perform tricks on such a narrow space. They train for years to master walking, running, jumping, and doing flips without falling off.
Modern creation. While tightrope walking exists in many cultures, the balance beam as a gymnastics apparatus was developed in 19th century Germany as part of organized gymnastics training.
