Cool facts
Summer Sleeping. Aestivation is like hibernation's heat-loving cousin. Instead of sleeping through freezing winters, some animals enter a deep sleep during the hottest, driest months of summer.
Slow-Motion Living. When an animal aestivates, its body slows way down, its heart beats slower, it breathes less, and it barely moves. This helps it survive when food is scarce and temperatures feel unbearable.
Heat and Drought. Animals aestivate when temperatures soar and the land becomes dry and parched. By sleeping through these brutal conditions, they conserve energy and water until conditions improve.
Who Does It?. Snails, crocodiles, lungfish, and some desert creatures are expert aestivators. They can stay dormant for weeks or even months until rain returns and life becomes easier again.
