Forty species. There are about 40 different kinds of dolphins living in waters around the world, from oceans to a few rivers.
Toothed whales. Dolphins belong to the group called toothed whales, which means they have teeth instead of the filtering plates that some giant whales use.
Mammals at sea. Even though they live in water, dolphins are mammals like us, they breathe air, are warm-blooded, and nurse their babies with milk.
Whale relatives. Dolphins are closely related to porpoises and to bigger whales, all part of a group of sea mammals called cetaceans.
