Softest fur ever. Chinchillas have incredibly dense, plush fur, with dozens of hairs growing from each follicle. It keeps them cozy high up in the cold Andes Mountains.

Sky-high homes. They live in the Andes Mountains of South America, at elevations up to 4,270 meters (14,000 feet) above sea level.

Living in herds. Chinchillas are social animals that live together in colonies called herds.

Active at twilight. They are crepuscular, meaning they're most active at dawn and dusk rather than the middle of the day or night.

Wild only in Chile. They once lived across Bolivia, Peru, and Chile, but today wild colonies are known only in Chile.
