Cool facts
Super-sized rodent. Beavers are the second-largest rodents alive, after capybaras, and can weigh up to 50 kg (110 lb).
Chisel teeth. Their long, chisel-like front teeth never stop growing, perfect for gnawing through tree bark and trunks.
Built to swim. Beavers have webbed back feet and a flat, scaly tail that helps them paddle through rivers, streams, and ponds.
Veggie eaters. They're herbivores, munching on tree bark, aquatic plants, grasses, and sedges.
Two kinds. There are two living species, the North American beaver and the Eurasian beaver, which differ in skull, tail shape, and fur color.
