Built-in armor. Tortoises carry a hard shell on their backs that protects them from predators and other dangers.

Head tuck trick. When threatened, a tortoise pulls its neck and head straight back into its shell to stay safe.

Reptile family. Tortoises belong to the order Testudines, the same group that includes turtles.

Land lovers. Unlike many turtles, tortoises live on land and often munch on plants and grasses.
