World traveler. Wild boars are native to much of Eurasia and North Africa, and have spread to the Americas and Oceania, making them one of the widest-ranging mammals on Earth.
Ancestor of pigs. The wild boar is the wild relative of farm pigs and one of the most successful members of the pig family.
Super adaptable. They can live in many different habitats, which is why scientists list them as 'least concern', there are lots of them and they thrive almost anywhere.
Ancient origins. Wild boars probably first appeared in Southeast Asia during the Early Pleistocene and outcompeted other pig species as they spread across the Old World.
Sometimes a pest. In some places they've been introduced, they've become an invasive species, causing problems for local plants and animals.
