What Makes Soil Fertile. Fertile soil has two superpowers: it supplies all the nutrients and water that plants need to grow strong and make lots of food, and it's clean enough to not poison the plants growing in it.

Essential Plant Food. Plants need nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium from soil, plus plenty of water delivered in just the right amounts so they can grow big and produce lots of fruit or grain.

Toxic Trouble. Sometimes soil contains harmful substances like excess iron that can actually poison plants and stop them from growing, even if all the good nutrients are there too.

Farming Success. When farmers have fertile soil, their crops grow consistently year after year, producing high quality food that's nutritious and strong instead of weak and small.

Soil Health Check. Soil fertility is closely related to soil health, which means checking if the soil has all the good stuff plants need and none of the bad stuff that could hurt them.
