Big violin family. The cello is a bowed string instrument in the violin family, but much larger and lower in pitch.
Four strings. Its four strings are usually tuned in perfect fifths: C, G, D and A from low to high.
Played sitting down. Because it's so big, you hold it between your knees and rest it on the floor with a spike called an endpin.
Deep voice. Cello music is mostly written in the bass clef, with higher notes written in tenor or treble clef.
