Cool facts
Ramadan is special. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, and it's when Muslims practice fasting as one of the five main pillars of Islam, which are the most important duties in the faith.
Fasting window. Muslims fast from dawn (when the morning prayer call happens) until sunset (when the evening prayer call happens), so they skip food and drink during daylight hours.
More than just food. Fasting means avoiding not just meals and drinks, but also other activities, to help people focus on prayer, reflection, and becoming closer to God.
Who fasts. Adult Muslims who are healthy enough are expected to fast during Ramadan, though children, sick people, and travelers can be excused from this duty.
The big celebration. When Ramadan ends, Muslims celebrate with Eid al-Fitr, a joyful festival where families gather to feast and give thanks together.
