Cool facts
Sixteen pieces each. Every player starts with one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. Each type moves in its own special way.
64 squares. The board is an 8ร8 grid of 64 squares, where two players called White and Black face off.
Checkmate the king. You win by trapping the enemy king so it can't escape capture. That move is called 'checkmate'.
Capturing pieces. You capture an enemy piece by moving one of your own pieces onto the square it sits on.
Sometimes a tie. Not every game has a winner, there are several ways a chess game can end in a draw.
