Tiny but mighty. The violin is the smallest and highest-pitched instrument in the violin family, so it sings out the soprano part.
Hollow wooden body. Its hollow wooden shape helps the sound bounce around inside and grow louder and richer.
Four strings. It usually has four strings tuned to G, D, A, and E, each a perfect fifth apart.
Bow it or pluck it. You can drag a bow across the strings, pluck them with your fingers (called pizzicato), or even tap them with the wooden side of the bow.
Also a fiddle. When it plays folk and country music, people often call the very same instrument a fiddle.
