Cool facts
Tiny hoppers. Kangaroo rats are small rodents that live in the deserts of western North America and mostly come out at night to search for food.
Night creatures. These rodents are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the hot desert day and wake up when it gets cool and dark to hunt for seeds and insects.
Independent jumpers. Kangaroo rats hop on their back legs just like real kangaroos do, but they developed this jumping style completely on their own over millions of years, not because they're related to kangaroos at all.
Desert survivors. They live in the dry, arid deserts of western North America where water is scarce, making them perfectly adapted creatures for one of Earth's toughest environments.
Built for speed. Their powerful back legs and long tail help them balance and move super fast, which is great for escaping predators across open desert ground.
