Moving to a new country. Immigration happens when someone leaves their home country and moves to a different country to live there for good. This is different from visiting as a tourist or commuting for work, which don't count as immigration.
Finding a permanent home. Immigrants become permanent residents of their new country, which means they settle there and make it their home. They might get a new nationality or citizenship in that country over time.
Not just short visits. If someone is just passing through, working for a season, or visiting temporarily, they're not considered an immigrant. But if they overstay and decide to remain, they can become one.
Reasons to immigrate. People immigrate for many reasons, like finding better jobs, escaping danger, joining family members, or starting fresh in a place with better opportunities.
Movement across borders. Immigration is when this movement happens between countries, which is different from moving within your own country to a different city or region.
