Cool facts
Epic journeys. Some animals travel thousands of miles every year, moving from one place to another as seasons change. Arctic terns fly from the Arctic to Antarctica and back again, covering more distance than any other animal on Earth.
Following the food. Many animals migrate because food becomes scarce in their home. When winter arrives and insects disappear, birds fly south to warmer places where they can find meals.
Escaping harsh weather. As temperatures drop and ice forms in winter, animals need to leave for warmer regions where they can survive. When spring arrives and weather improves, they return home.
Time to have babies. Some animals migrate to special breeding grounds where they can safely have their babies. Whales travel to warm ocean waters to mate and give birth where their calves will be protected.
Amazing navigation. Animals use the sun, stars, Earth's magnetic field, and even landmarks to find their way across vast distances. Scientists are still amazed at how creatures remember routes and find their way back year after year.
