Cool facts
Shoots boiling water. Geysers erupt by spraying hot water and steam up into the air in sudden, dramatic bursts. This happens when water underground gets superheated by hot rocks beneath the Earth's surface.
Super rare on Earth. Geysers are found in only a few special places around the world. They need very specific conditions deep underground, which is why most areas don't have any.
Powered by heat. Geysers work because of hot underground rocks that heat water to extreme temperatures. When the pressure builds up enough, the water and steam suddenly explode upward.
Happens on a schedule. Unlike regular hot springs, geysers don't flow constantly, they erupt at different intervals and then calm down. Some geysers erupt regularly while others are unpredictable.
Steam and power. The eruptions are dramatic because both hot water and steam shoot out together with lots of force. This combination creates the spectacular shows that make geysers so amazing to watch.
