Cool facts
Spots and stripes. Leopards have spotted coats and tigers have stripes that help them disappear into tall grass and shadows. These patterns break up the animal's outline so predators have a harder time seeing them.
Ocean transparency. In the deep ocean where there's no background to hide against, some creatures like jellyfish and squid become nearly invisible by being completely see-through. Others reflect light like mirrors to blend with the bright water above.
Quick color-changers. Chameleons and octopuses can actually change their skin color and pattern in seconds whenever they want. They do this both to hide from danger and to talk to other animals without making a sound.
Looking like leaves. Some insects like the katydid have wings shaped and colored to look exactly like leaves on a tree. An enemy might walk right past them without even knowing they're there!
Confusing motion patterns. Some animals wear bold, eye-catching stripes or patterns that don't hide them at all, instead, these dazzling designs make it hard for an attacker to figure out exactly where the animal is moving.
