Cool facts
Two pairs each. Most of a millipede's body segments carry two pairs of legs, which is how the class got its scientific name, Diplopoda.
Not really a thousand. The name means 'thousand feet,' but no millipede had that many until 2020, when scientists found Eumillipes persephone with over 1,300 legs!
Roll into a ball. Pill millipedes are short and can curl up into a tight ball to protect themselves.
Huge family. There are around 12,000 named species, making millipedes the largest class of myriapods.
