Dream-like art. Surrealist artists created paintings and sculptures that looked like dreams, with weird combinations of things that don't normally go together, like melting clocks or floating objects.
The unconscious mind. Surrealists believed that deep inside everyone's mind, there are thoughts and feelings we don't notice on purpose. They wanted to let these hidden thoughts come out through their art.
Born after World War I. Surrealism started in Europe after World War I ended, when people were thinking a lot about strange and confusing things they had seen.

More than just painting. Surrealists didn't just make paintings and sculptures. They also wrote stories, made films, performed in theaters, and created music using surreal ideas.
Super-reality vision. The leader André Breton said surrealism's goal was to blend dreams with real life into something he called a super-reality, where logic doesn't have to make sense.
