Massive modern city. Shanghai is home to more than 30 million people, making it the fifth-largest city in the entire world. That's more than the population of Canada living in just one city.

Where rivers meet sea. Shanghai sits right at the southern mouth of the Yangtze River, where it flows into the ocean. The Huangpu River runs through the middle of the city, dividing it into different neighborhoods.

Direct-administered municipality. Shanghai has a special status in China as a provincial-level city, meaning it has more independence than regular cities. It's one of the most important economic centers in all of China.
