Cool facts
Not a lizard. Salamanders look like lizards with their slender bodies and tails, but they're actually amphibians, more closely related to frogs!
Tail for life. Unlike frogs, salamanders keep their tails as adults. The name 'Urodela' even means 'conspicuous tail' in ancient Greek.
Sideways legs. Their short little limbs stick out at right angles from their bodies, giving them a low, sprawling walk.
Ten families. There are ten living salamander families, all grouped under an order that's the last survivor of an ancient group called Caudata.
