Small but mighty. A pony is a small horse, usually shorter than about 14 hands tall at the shoulder (the spot called the withers).
Extra fluffy. Ponies often have thicker coats, manes, and tails than bigger horses, which helps keep them warm and cozy.
Built sturdy. They have proportionally shorter legs, wider bodies, thicker necks, and heavier bones than full-sized horses.
What's in a name. The word 'pony' comes from an old French word, poulenet, meaning a foal, or a young, immature horse.
Pony or horse?. Some people decide if an animal is a pony based on its breed and shape, not just its height.
