Cool facts
Vast underwater landscape. The seabed covers more than 70% of Earth's surface, making it larger than all the land continents combined. It's a world we're still learning to explore.
Mountain ranges below. The seabed has the longest mountain chain on Earth called the Mid-Ocean Ridge system, which is much bigger than the Rocky Mountains or the Alps.
Made of rock and sand. The seabed is covered with sediment like sand, mud, and rocks, plus it's where underwater volcanoes can erupt and create new ocean floor.
Home to sea creatures. Thousands of strange and wonderful animals live on the seabed, from tiny crustaceans to giant squids in the deepest parts.
Constantly changing. The seabed moves and shifts as tectonic plates collide and spread apart, creating earthquakes and reshaping the ocean floor over millions of years.
