Cool facts
From hunting to farming. For thousands of years, people in Mesoamerica hunted animals and gathered wild plants to eat. Then slowly, they started planting crops near their camps instead of moving around all the time.
Accidental crops. Some plants probably grew by accident when people dropped seeds or ate fruits and the seeds passed through their bodies. These plants then sprouted wherever people lived, giving them free food.
Purposeful planting. People also might have deliberately brought wild plants closer to their homes to make them easier to collect and harvest. This smart idea meant less walking and more food nearby.
Food security. Growing crops gave Mesoamericans a big advantage: they could store extra food near their seasonal camps. This meant they had backup supplies when hunting was difficult, during droughts, or when animals were hard to find.
Settling down. With farming providing steady meals, people stopped being nomads and started living in permanent settlements. This huge change happened gradually over many centuries during the Archaic period.
