Cool facts
Spinning around low pressure. Hurricanes are giant rotating systems of clouds and thunderstorms that spin around a center of very low air pressure, like a massive whirlpool in the sky.
Summer and fall season. Most Atlantic hurricanes happen between June and November, with August and September being the peak months when conditions in the ocean are just right for them to form.
Born over tropical waters. These storms start their lives over warm tropical or subtropical ocean waters, where they gather energy and grow stronger.
Organized cloud systems. Unlike regular thunderstorms, hurricanes are highly organized with specific patterns of clouds and thunderstorms all working together as one massive system.
Danger beyond the eye. The destructive weather spreads across a huge area around the storm, it's not just dangerous at the center, but strong winds and heavy rain affect everything for many miles around.
