Massive sandstone monolith. Uluru is an enormous single rock made of sandstone that rises out of the red desert in central Australia, about 335 kilometers southwest of Alice Springs.
Changes colors magically. The rock appears to glow different shades of orange, red, and purple depending on the time of day and the sunlight hitting it, creating a stunning natural light show.
Heart of Australia. Uluru sits near the very center of Australia in the Northern Territory, surrounded by vast red desert landscape that stretches for miles in every direction.
Sacred to Anangu people. The Anangu Aboriginal people have lived in the area around Uluru for thousands of years and consider it a deeply spiritual and sacred place with important cultural stories.
Two names, one rock. The rock is officially known by both its Aboriginal name, Uluru, and its older European name, Ayers Rock, though the Aboriginal name is increasingly used today.
