Many species. There are 19 different hamster species, sorted into seven groups. The golden or Syrian hamster is the one most people keep as a pet.

Cheek pouches. Hamsters have stretchy cheek pouches they use to carry food back to their burrow, sometimes storing a surprising amount at once.

Tiny dwarfs. Some pet hamsters are dwarf species, like Campbell's, the winter white, and the speedy little Roborovski.

Night owls. Hamsters are most active in the evening and night, which is why pet hamsters love running on their wheel after dark.
