Cool facts
Hidden crystal caves. Geodes are hollow rocks that look pretty boring on the outside, but when you crack them open, they're filled with glittering crystals inside. It's like finding a secret treasure chamber in a rock!
How they form. Geodes start when water carrying dissolved minerals seeps into tiny cavities inside sedimentary and volcanic rocks over thousands of years. The minerals slowly build up layer by layer, creating the sparkly crystal lining you see inside.
Crystal wonderland. The inside of a geode is covered with mineral crystals like quartz, amethyst, or calcite that grew from the mineral-rich water. Each geode is unique, with different colors and crystal shapes depending on which minerals formed it.
Surprise opening. When you split a geode open, you're breaking through the hard outer shell to reveal the sparkling interior for the first time in millions of years. Geologists and crystal collectors love hunting for geodes to see what beautiful crystals hide inside.
