Cool facts
Born in clouds. Snowflakes start as tiny ice crystals that form high up in clouds. They grow bigger and bigger until they're heavy enough to fall.
Crystal shapes. Snow is made of frozen, crystalline water. Each crystal grows into a delicate, six-sided shape as it floats through the air.
Piling up. When snow lands on the ground, it accumulates into soft, white layers that can cover whole streets and fields.
The big changes. After it lands, snow keeps changing in place. Eventually it melts, slides away, or sublimates, turning straight from ice into vapor.
