Cool facts
Too cold for trees. In the tundra, freezing temperatures and a very short growing season stop trees from growing tall, leaving wide-open, treeless land.
Three kinds. There are three types of tundra: Arctic (near the North Pole), Alpine (high up on mountains), and Antarctic (near the South Pole).
Quick growing season. Plants here only have a short window of warmer weather to grow before the cold returns.
Mountain tundra. Alpine tundra is found high on mountains, where it's so cold and windy that trees simply can't survive.
