Humps hold fat. A camel's hump isn't full of water, it's packed with fatty deposits the camel can use for energy when food is scarce.
One or two. The one-humped dromedary makes up 94% of all camels, while the two-humped Bactrian camel makes up the other 6%.
Desert experts. Camels are working animals perfectly suited to deserts, carrying both passengers and cargo across hot, sandy lands.
Helpful livestock. People have domesticated camels for a long time, using them for food and textiles like wool.
Rare wild cousin. The wild Bactrian camel is a separate, critically endangered species, with fewer than 1,000 individuals left.
