Crossing the gap. A bridge spans an obstacle like a river or railway so that people, cars, and trains can get to the other side.
Flat deck on top. Most bridges have a flat deck where you walk or drive, held up by beams, arches, or cables.
Spreading the weight. Bridges rest on strong foundations that pass all the weight down into the ground so they don't sink or settle.
Many shapes. Some bridges use curved arches, some use straight beams, and some hang from huge cables stretched between towers.
