Martial arts practice. In tai chi and qigong, people use special breathing techniques to strengthen their diaphragm muscles (the ones that help you breathe) and protect their organs. One popular method is called reverse breathing, where you breathe in a different pattern than usual.
Yoga's pranayama. In yoga, a practice called pranayama focuses on controlling your breath. Practitioners believe it helps move life energy through your body and makes you feel more energized and calm.
Mindfulness meditation. Buddhist meditators use a technique called anapanasati, which means watching your breath very carefully. By paying attention to each breath in and out, they train their minds to be more focused and peaceful.
Your breathing muscles. When you practice conscious breathing, you exercise the diaphragm, which is the main muscle under your lungs that does most of the work when you breathe. Stronger breathing muscles help your whole body work better.
Mind and body connection. Conscious breathing techniques teach you that your breath and your mind are connected. By controlling your breathing, you can calm your thoughts and feel less stressed.
