Birth of Drama. Theatre flourished in ancient Greece starting around 700 BC, and the city of Athens became its creative heart. The Greeks created three main types of plays: tragedies (serious stories), comedies (funny stories), and satyr plays (wild, silly adventures).
Festival of Dionysus. Plays were performed at a special festival called the Dionysia, held to honour the god Dionysus. This wasn't just entertainment, it was a major religious and political event for the whole city of Athens.
Spreading the Culture. As Athens grew powerful, it shared theatre with all its colonies around the Mediterranean. This helped spread Greek ideas about drama to many other places.
Our Theatre DNA. Almost everything about modern theatre comes from ancient Greece, including technical words we still use, the idea of dividing plays into types, and many of the characters and stories we love today.
