Many tiny countries. Ancient Greece wasn't one big country at first. It was made of many separate city-states, each with its own rules, like Athens and Sparta.
Birth of democracy. The city of Athens created an early form of democracy, where citizens could vote on decisions instead of having just one ruler decide everything.
United at last. The many Greek regions were officially joined together just once before the Romans, under the Kingdom of Macedon from 338 to 323 BC.
Big ideas. The Greeks loved thinking about the world, giving us famous philosophers, scientists, and amazing myths that people still enjoy today.
Sea-loving land. Ancient Greece sat by the northeastern Mediterranean Sea, so the Greeks became great sailors, traders, and explorers.
