Super long legs. Wading birds have especially long, thin legs that let them walk through shallow water without getting their feathers wet. This special design helps them hunt for food in places other birds can't easily reach.
Many different families. Wading birds aren't just one type of bird, but a whole group that includes flamingos, storks, herons, ibises, and some surprising birds like the hamerkop and shoebill. They all share the watery lifestyle but are actually related to different bird families.
DNA surprised scientists. For a long time, scientists thought all wading birds were closely related because they looked alike and lived similar lives. But new DNA studies discovered something wild: flamingos are actually more closely related to grebes, while herons and ibises are more related to pelicans!
Wetland specialists. These birds live in semi-aquatic ecosystems like swamps, marshes, and shallow lakes where they can wade around searching for fish, frogs, and other small creatures. Their long legs are perfectly built for this watery world.
