What was it?. Vaudeville was a type of live entertainment where audiences would watch a bunch of different acts in one show, kind of like a really fancy variety show. You might see acrobats, funny comedians, singers, dancers, magicians, and even trained animals all performing back to back.
The golden age. Vaudeville became hugely popular in America and Canada starting in the 1870s and had its best years until around the 1930s. It was the main way people enjoyed entertainment before movies and television took over.
Anything goes. Because vaudeville wasn't about telling one story, performers could be really creative and try wild new acts. Comedians could test out jokes, singers could perform any song they wanted, and acrobats could show off their most amazing tricks.
Star makers. Many famous entertainers became superstars through vaudeville stages, using these theaters to practice and perfect their acts before becoming household names. It was like the ultimate training ground for performers.
Theater experience. Going to a vaudeville show was exciting because you never knew what was coming next on stage, and the energy between the audience and performers made each show feel special and unpredictable.
