Cool facts
Born in America. Supermarkets first appeared around 1930 in the United States, when stores came up with a clever idea: let customers pick their own groceries instead of asking a shopkeeper to fetch items from behind a counter.
Spread worldwide. After 1956, supermarkets became famous all around the world and started popping up in other countries, changing how people shopped for food everywhere.
Everything under one roof. What makes a supermarket special is that you can buy food, drinks, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and lots of other household items all in the same building, organized into different sections.
Size matters. Supermarkets are bigger than regular grocery stores but smaller than massive hypermarkets or megastores that came along later and sell even more stuff.
