Set the direction. Phoenician was the first alphabet to have a fixed writing direction, going from right to left in straight horizontal lines. Before this, people wrote in all different directions, which was confusing.
Egyptian connection. The Phoenician alphabet didn't come from nowhere, it developed from the Proto-Sinaitic script, which itself came from Egyptian hieroglyphs. This shows how writing systems evolved over time.
Spread everywhere. Because the Phoenicians were great traders who sailed all over the Mediterranean, their alphabet spread to many different places and peoples. Many modern alphabets used today are descended from the Phoenician letters.
