Cool facts
No synthetic chemicals. Organic farms skip artificial pesticides and fertilizers, instead using natural materials like compost, manure, and bone meal to feed the soil and protect crops.
Rotation and companions. Farmers plant different crops in the same field year after year to keep soil healthy, and they plant certain crops next to each other because they help each other grow better.
Bugs as helpers. Instead of poison sprays, organic farmers encourage beneficial insects like ladybugs that eat the pests, creating a natural balance in the field.
Modern movement. Organic farming started in the early 1900s as farmers wanted to move away from new chemical methods and farm more naturally.
Growing worldwide. By 2019, over 70 million hectares of land worldwide were certified organic farms, with more than half of that in Australia.
