Hundreds of sports exist. But only a select few make it to the Olympics! The 2024 Summer Olympics featured 32 different sports, while the 2022 Winter Olympics had 7 sports.

Each sport has a boss. Every Olympic sport is run by a special organization called an International Federation, or IF. This group makes sure the rules are fair for everyone around the world.

Summer and winter split up. Some sports happen in the warm Summer Olympics like swimming and gymnastics, while others like ice hockey and skiing only happen in the cold Winter Olympics.

Sports get voted in and out. The International Olympic Committee decides which sports get to be in the Games, so new sports can be added and old ones can be removed over time.
