Fought Against Apartheid. Mandela spent his life fighting against apartheid, a system in South Africa that treated Black people unfairly and kept them separate from white people. He believed all people deserved equal rights and dignity.
27 Years in Prison. Mandela was arrested for his activism and spent 27 years in prison for standing up for what he believed in. Despite this hardship, he never gave up on his dream of a free South Africa.
First Black President. In 1994, Mandela became South Africa's first Black president after the country held its first fully democratic election where all people could vote, regardless of their race.
